My topic for this last Sunday was worry...one I assume may be of universal application. If you were in service on Sunday, you heard the solo sung by Aimie Morris, "Here". If you missed it, you can access it either on the church website or the CarmelUMC mobile app, it's a must see, because it was so beautiful.
In the song, the lyrics "Breathe in, breathe out" were sung repeatedly. I don't think there is a better way to address the concern of "worry" than to practice those words "breathe in, breathe out".
What this leads us to is a practice that dates back to the 6th century and one I practice regularly in my life is the breath prayer. A breath prayer simply begins with your inhale (I love that I am reminded that God is only a breath away) and exhale, inhale and exhale, inhale and exhale---slow and rhythmically. Once you find a rhythm, then you may want to connect your mind also. You may choose something like the following. Choose just one and stay with it.
Inhale Jesus let me feel Exhale your love
Inhale Holy One, Exhale heal me
Inhale Holy Wisdom, Exhale guide me
Inhale O Lord, Exhale show me your way
I guarantee you...in fact 100% guarantee that if you practice this style of prayer throughout your day that your worry will begin to lessen and your blood pressure will lower too!!!
I invite you to try!!!
