This week we call Holy Week, it is the time we journey alongside Jesus to the cross. I think how difficult that experience had to be for Jesus but then I also remember the example He sets for me to remain focused on our purpose here on earth and the promise of eternity.
We have a sermon series which will begin on Sunday April 8th entitled You and Me Forever. In the introduction, the author Francis Chan says:
"Even now, I am working to make sure that my family is set up for the future. When most people make that statement, they are talking about financial security for their last few years on earth. When I say it, I'm referring to the millions of years that come after that. People accuse me of going overboard in preparing for my first ten million years in eternity. In my opinion, people go overboard in worrying about their last ten years on earth."
I believe this is how Jesus lived and taught us to live. It is God's plan for us. Don't get lost in the weeds of today that we forget to look up to God and eternity.
I am reminded of this when Jesus was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane. Simon Peter was obviously opposed and angry with the scenario that was unfolding so he took things into his own hands and struck a priest's slave and cut off his right ear.
Jesus said "Put your sword back into its sheath. Am I not to drink the cup that the Father has given me?"
I think what Jesus was saying to Simon Peter and to us was to stop trying to control everything to your desires. Instead live into and according to God's will for our lives. And for Jesus that meant He drank the cup.
Hope to see you at worship...
