English as a Second Language

Inspired by God’s call to love the foreigner, the mission of The Carmel ESL program is to provide adults with the conversational English skills needed to advance towards the fulfillment of educational, vocational, and personal goals.


Program consists of adult volunteer tutors & takes place @ Carmel UMC  Students must reside in Hamilton county & all nationalities are welcome regardless of religious beliefs

  • Tutors commit to one year of teaching for 1.5 hours per week excluding holidays - we follow the Carmel Clay school calendar for closings & holidays
  • Weekly meeting date is mutually agreed by volunteer & student
  • Curriculum materials are provided for $20 fee to help defray costs
  • Tutors are volunteers & are not guaranteed - students are placed on wait list if no tutor available at time of inquiry

  • Training, curriculum & ongoing support are provided
  • Volunteers are asked to give 2.0 hours per week for a minimum of one year to work with student (time off for vacations & illness are expected)

Teaching experience is not required – only a willingness to serve the immigrant community
